New Deer Management Group Formed in Dumfries & Galloway

Deer management Groups (DMG's) are groups of deer stalkers, land owners and deer interested parties that work together aiming for a collaborative approach to deer management. East Dumfries and Galloway DMG which has established a base at the Ecclefechan Hotel has now indicated to the Lowland Deer Network Scotland (LNDS) that they are in a position to launch the group.

Being a member of a deer management group has several advantages including insurance with the Scottish Association for Country Sports (SACS) with £10m of liability cover. Other advantages include land matching where local deer stalkers can be paired with land owners looking for deer management to take place on their holdings and sponsored training and skills development.

East D&G DMG aims to promote skills development and better education across their area for land owners and the public so that deer management can be accepted and more readily practiced. The group aims to give its members access to discounted rate DSC1 courses and DSC2 training with witnessing as needed. This contributes to an improved level of deer management CV that can only benefit the member looking to secure their own stalking leases or private agreements.

The Club Treasurer, Mr Stephen Kelly who is the proprietor of the Ecclefechan Hotel adds ‘we are looking forward to bringing people together to provide an important service and aid in the raising of standards for deer management locally. It will be a very positive step forward to now support people with an interest in deer management and stalking but also the land owners who needs vary across the region’
